Coventry City: Fulop, Hall, Page, Duffy, Doyle, Adebola, McSheffrey, Scowcroft, Morrell (Hutchison 70), Jorgensen (Thornton 90), Heath. Subs: Ince, Whing, Shaw.
Norwich City: Green, Drury, Huckerby (Brennan 43), Thorne, Ashton, Hughes (McVeigh 49), Wright (Fleming 46), Henderson, Davenport, Doherty, Robinson. Subs: Gallacher, Rossi Jarvis.
NORWICH City showed real grit to claw back a two goal deficit to snatch a draw at Coventry.
Another disastrous start on the road had seen the Canaries 2-0 down inside 10 minutes thanks to strikes from Gary McSheffrey and Dele Adebola.
But a headed effort five minutes before half time from former Sky Blue Calum Davenport brought City back into it before a strike from substitute Craig Fleming with six minutes left claimed a share of the spoils.
Indeed, City could have claimed all three points following their vastly improved second half showing, with Paul McVeigh seeing a header clawed off the goal-line by the home 'keeper.
In the end it was a good point gained, but Nigel Worthington was again left counting the cost as Darren Huckerby, Andy Hughes and David Wright were all forced out of the game with injury.
Worthington named two changes from the side which lost to Millwall in midweek.
Carl Robinson, who joined on loan from Sunderland on Thursday was thrown straight into central midfield alongside Andy Hughes.
Missing from the squad completely was fellow loan man Dickson Etuhu, who failed to even make the squad due to an injury suffered on Friday to his upper leg.
Likewise, Youssef Safri was still struggling to shake off his troublesome groin problems and was left out.
This gave Ian Henderson a chance to play on the right side of midfield, with Peter Thorne partnering Dean Ashton in attack.
Before kick off, as there was at every league ground in the country today, there was a period of applause for football legend George Best, who died on Friday at the age of 59.
All players were also sporting black armbands in respect of the former Manchester United and Northern Ireland star.
And the game was barely two minutes old when Coventry took the lead through an incredible fluke effort.
There looked to be little danger when McSheffrey picked up the ball just inside the City half.
To be fair, Drury did well to stick close to him and force him wide of goal and to the by-line.
Incredibly though, McSheffrey's cross seemed to spin off the outstretched boot of Drury and over Green, dropping in at the far post.
It was a sickening start for the Canaries, who so desperately needed a bright start following the loss to rock-bottom Millwall in midweek.
And before the 10 minute mark Norwich found themselves two goals down.
The ball found its way through to Adebola on the left side of midfield.
Doherty had missed the initial throughball, leaving Adebola the chance to sprint past Davenport and slot coolly past Green.
A bad start had suddenly become a disastrous one.
The Canaries looked to hit back instantly, but Ashton was adjudged to have pushed his man as he rose to meet Andy Hughes' cross from the right.
On the plus side, Robinson had started the game well, and it was his fine ball on 14 minutes which set Huckerby up for a curling shot which flashed wide of the far post.
But City still looked jittery, and on 17 minutes Davenport missed his kick horribly as Adebola closed in.
The former Crewe man held the ball up well and laid it into the path of Claus Jorgensen, who blasted over from 20 yards.
On 19 minutes Norwich wasted their best chance to get back into the game.
Robinson's free kick found Doherty on the far post, and his header back across was met by Thorne.
Sadly, his effort from three yards out under pressure ended up on the roof of the net rather than in it.
Three minutes later and there were more promising signs for Norwich.
Henderson whipped a great ball across the edge of the Coventry box, with Ashton's well-controlled half volley flying just over.
There was no doubt though - City needed a goal and they needed it fast.
Huckerby, booed all game by the home fans for the second successive away game, was felled by a horrible challenge by Richard Duffy on 35 minutes.
The tackle earned Duffy a booking, although Hughes was also shown the yellow card for his angry reaction to the studs-up challenge.
Huckerby was coming in for some very physical treatment, and Doyle was the next player to find his name in Rob Styles' book on 39 minutes for a bad tackle.
But a minute later and City were back in the match.
Doherty did ever so well to shield the ball on the edge of the area before playing it back to Drury on the left side of the box.
His cross was inch perfect for Davenport on the far post, and the former Coventry man marked his return in style by steering the ball into the far corner of the net.
It was a well-taken goal, with the timing of it crucial.
Shortly before half time the rough treatment handed out to Huckerby took its toll when he was forced off and replaced by Jim Brennan.
City boss Worthington made one switch at half-time, replacing David Wright with Craig Fleming at right-back.
On 48 minutes Norwich almost fell further behind.
Coventry's corner from the right was only headed on at the near post by Ashton, and Page rose highest at the back to send a point-blank header over the bar when he really should have hit the target.
On 49 minutes Worthy made his final change of the afternoon, with Andy Hughes replaced by Paul McVeigh.
One could only assume the change was the result of injury, with Brennan moving to central midfield and McVeigh going to wide left.
On 53 minutes Hall became the fourth Coventry player to be booked when he took down Henderson as he looked to break away down the right.
Henderson was left in a painful heap on the floor. And with Worthy already having expended all three of his substitutes, there was genuine relief when Henderson was able to continue.
Two minutes later Norwich had a great chance to level.
Subsitute McVeigh did well to collect a loose ball on the left and his first time cross was flicked on by Ashton before Thorne sent his effort over the bar.
All the same, it was encouraging stuff and signs Norwich were not yet out of things.
But on the hour mark there was real controversy when City thought they had clawed their way level, only to be denied.
There was all sorts of confusion in the Coventry box when McVeigh's miscued overhead kick arched away to the back post for Brennan.
Brennan looped the ball back into the box where McVeigh sent a downward header goalwards.
The ball looked to have beaten Fullop, with the 3,000 City fans behind the goal getting up to celebrate.
But as Fullop recovered to clutch the ball on the line, there was no signal from the assistant referee to suggest it had gone over.
City were now piling on the pressure, with Norwich playing not just the best football of this game, but also the last two.
On 66 minutes Ashton was presented with a half chance when Henderson's dipping cross found him eight yards out.
But his header only fizzed over the bar.
City were playing well, but needed to make their chances count with the game nudging towards the 70 minute mark.
However, Coventry were still enjoying chances on the break, and Adebola flashed a header wide of the far post on 74 minutes after McSheffrey had turned Doherty inside-out on the left.
With the game in the final 10 minutes, Henderson sent a header over the bar from 12 yards out following Drury's cross.
But on 84 minutes City finally got what their second half efforts had deserved and drew level.
Fullop flapped at a cross from the left by Drury, and the unlikely figure of Craig Fleming was on hand to bundle the ball into the empty net for his first goal since the win over West Brom last season.
Fleming went wild in celebration in front of the travelling support, with City now sensing what had looked to be an unlikely victory after the opening 10 minutes.
