HERO of Cardiff Ched Evans was delighted with his 35-yard stunner at Ninian Park - but still believed he's scored better goals.

The on-loan Manchester City star produced the goal of the weekend, and possibly of City's season, in the 88th minute to give the Canaries their third win in a row and move them to within four points of the play-offs.

His late stunner was added to a more modest first half effort which had given Glenn Roeder's men the lead against the equally in-form Welshmen.

But Welsh U21 star Evans, who scored a hat-trick for his international side against France on the same ground back in November, saved the best until last, unleashing his right-foot howitzer to send Norwich back to Norfolk with the three points after Gavin Rae had equalised just before the break.

The strike was certainly the best seen by a City player in recent memory, evoking comparisons with Youssef Safri's blockbuster against Newcastle almost three years ago. But as for Evans, it ranked only in his top three.

"I scored two from the half-way line in pre-season for Man City reserves," he said. "Crossbar and in. But, no, it was probably one of the best goals that I've scored."

In terms of importance, his Beckham-esque efforts for the Blues' second string were certainly eclipsed by Saturday's moment of magic. That goal made it six for Evans since joining on loan from Eastlands back in November, a day after his hat-trick heroics against the French.

When Evans arrived at Carrow Road, he joined with Norwich rock-bottom of the league and facing a momentous task to pull themselves clear of danger. Just over three months later and talk of a play-off push is ripe around the city, a fact not lost on Evans.

"Every time we play we just gain in confidence," he said. "We're all bonding well, so it's going well at the moment.

"We were just looking to get out of the relegation zone when I first came and now we're looking to be in the play-offs so it's exciting. All we needed was some confidence and now we've got bags of it - we're just all enjoying our football at the moment."

As for his winner, the player admitted his decision to shoot had been against the orders of boss Roeder, who admitted afterwards he would have been happy to have left Cardiff with a point under his belt.

"I think the gaffer was shouting run it into the corner," he said. "I know I can score goals like that. I've got the confidence - and I'm glad I did."

So were the 400-strong army of travelling fans, who with a home game with Hull City next on the agenda on Tuesday night, have suddenly been given reason dream again.
