MARTIN HAT-TRICK IN RESERVE ROMP
A HAT-TRICK by teenage striker Chris Martin helped City's reserves to a comprehensive 5-0 win at Luton.
The 19-year-old scored three times in the opening 48 minutes to set City on their way, with further goals by Korey Smith and Danny Kelly completing the rout at Kenilworth Road.
Goalkeeper Matthew Gilks also saved a first half penalty to preserve City's clean sheet.
It was a young reserve side named by boss Paul Stephenson, with the home side boasting some experienced heads in the shape of former Canary Paul McVeigh and ex-Ipswich stars Darren Currie and Sam Parkin.
But it was the visitors who got the scoring underway as early as the 12th minute, with Martin getting his first of the afternoon following a surging run and pass from left-back Robert Eagle.
City continued to press hard, but on 31 minutes Luton were handed an excellent chance to level when they were awarded a penalty. Tom Miller was adjudged to have fouled Andrew. But Gilks guessed the right way to save from the spot.
And the miss proved costly, with City going further ahead just before half time. Eagle and Martin once again combined well, with the latter firing past 'keeper Marlon Beresford from close range.
Martin was in fine form and completed his hat-trick three minutes into the second half. Luke Daley played in a cross from the right, with Martin taking one touch on his chest before finishing from close range.
Luton looked to hit back, and on 74 minutes skipper Jarvis had to head off his own line from a looping Andrew header. But, with just two minutes of normal time remaining, City struck twice more.
First 'keeper Beresford embarassed himself by giving the ball away to substitute Smith after trying to dribble round the youngster, giving the City player the simplest of finishes into an empty net. And a minute later Kelly completed the scoring, finishing into the bottom corner after beating Sinclair.
The rout made it 12 goals in the last two reserve outings for City, with Stephenson's players hitting Grays Athletic for seven last week.
Norwich City Reserves: Gilks, Bexfield (Halliday 45), Miller, Cave-Brown, Eagle, R Kelly, Lathrope, Rossi Jarvis (c), Smart (Smith 66)), Martin, Daley (D Kelly 72). Subs not used: Arnold, Richardson.
