TWO second half goals from Bally Smart helped City reserves salvage a draw after finding themselves 2-0 down against Southend's second string.

The Canaries had looked to be heading for defeat after the hosts had surged into a two-goal lead, with strikes coming from Lee Barnard and Charlie MacDonald.

But teenager Smart had other ideas, scoring twice in the space of three minutes to claim a point for Paul Stephenson's side.

Southend took the lead in the 22nd minute, with Barnard scoring from the penalty spot after the same player was fouled by Andrew Cave-Brown.

The Canaries had a good chance to level things through the in-form Chris Martin minutes later, but the striker could not find the target from close range.

Cave-Brown then made amends for his earlier foul by clearing off the line from MacDonald. But four minutes after the break the player found a way through, snaffling a rebound after Matthew Gilks had spilled his initial effort.

Southend had further chances to increase their lead, but were left to rue the misses when City found their way back into the game in the 66th minute.

The goal came from the pace of Smart, with the South African youth winger racing into the box from an angle and sliding a shot under the body of 'keeper Steve Collis.

And Smart struck again on 69 minutes to level matters, producing a neat finish from 10 yards after beating Johnny Herd to the ball.

Southend came back hunting a winner, and the Canaries were indebted to Gilks late on, with the 'keeper saving well from Scannell.
